Greed, Glamour and Grudges – Tales of Gold, will be this summer’s show held in Queenstown Gardens from 27 to 29 January 2012.  The theme is in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Otago.  As usual, the performance will be a collection of different pieces with a mixture of drama, comedy and music.

This year we’d like to give a few more people the opportunity to direct so each piece may have its own director, with one director managing the overall theme and making sure that the pieces work together.

Auditions for performers will be held on 19th November.  Call 021 255 1790 for more information and to book a time slot.  No experience required but please be aware that you will need to commit time for rehearsals and learning lines!

Rehearsals are progressing really well but most of us are able to build our familiarity with our roles out of the public gaze.  This year though Kate Blackhurst, our director, has decided to use a feature of the Queenstown Gardens environment that it is hard to replicate in the rehearsal rooms.

Getting in and out of the boat presented some challenges at first especially as the boat has been very kindly loaned to us for the duration and the floor of the pond is quite rocky.  As the ‘boys’ started to focus on their characters and lines though, they became almost blasé and the potential for a mid-summer dip loomed.

The scene was run through a few times without any mis-hap though (we’ll be savings those for the performances!)

As we get nearer to performance week (21st, 22nd and 23rd January 2011) we’ll be rehearsing in the gardens more often and attracting those curious, suspicious and uncomprehending looks from those out playing Frisbee golf or just wandering about.  It can be quite challenging for actors used to having a convenient stage edge between them and the audience so if you see us about, encouragement (and/or applause) would be very gratefully received!

Rehearsals for this summer’s production, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gardens…”, began this week with some of the cast gathering and reviewing their scripts.  I went along to see how things were shaping up and found the actors marking up their scripts and exploring what their characters are trying to achieve with each line.

Then it was straight into the scenes.  First with the script in front…

… and then taking the leap to running through the scene without the scripts – and the comedy came alive!

At times I was laughing so much the photos were coming out all blurry.  It is amazing the how quickly the characters take shape once the actors put the paper down and start to focus on interacting with each other.

As this scene is so funny already, it is going to be absolutely hilarious by January.  I can’t wait to see the audience in stitches.
